Three Stores Named Nation's Best Corner Shops

Best British Corner Shop Award Atwal News

Three convenience stores have been named jointly as Britain's Best Corner Shops in our recent national competition.

The competition searched for shops nationwide that are the epitome of the best of British.

Managing Director, Mark Callaghan explained: 'Atwal News Ltd. in Hatton, Derbyshire, The Fruit Basket in Newborough near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire and The Spar in Brigg, North Lincolnshire were nominated by their customers for the prestigious title.

'We were looking for those that offer a real community service and are at the heart of the area they serve. Good old-fashioned customer service is vital. We were really impressed with the customers' comments at the three stores.'

As part of the competition, entrants were asked to submit an entry form detailing why their shop deserved to be named as one of the best corner shops in the country. The entry included a section for customer comments and testimonials.

The three shops were also awarded the title of Best Corner Shop in their counties too.

Atwal News Ltd's owner Balvir Singh said: 'I'm delighted with this award and for my shop to be named as one of the country's Best British Corner Shops.'

Spar Brigg Best British Shop Award

The Fruit Basket in Newborough is owned by Kevin Greaves and the Spar in Brigg is run by Nigel Greenwood and his wife Kim.

Spar customer, Pat Taylor explained: 'The shop is the hub of the community. Kim and Nigel look after the welfare of a lot of the pensioners in the area and have taken them on occasions to doctors or hospital appointments.

'I have had firsthand experience of this kindness. I have a 34-year-old son, Carl, who has learning difficulties and epilepsy and on rare occasions when my husband has to attend a meeting Nigel is always on standby.

'My son often has a seizure and gets trapped and harms himself, so I call Nigel and he comes and helps, as I cannot lift Carl on my own.

'Also if Carl or my husband are ill in the night, Kim and Nigel have given me their telephone number so I can call them. Luckily I haven't had to ring yet but it's so nice to know I have this support. The Spar is so much more than a shop.
