Why am I only now discovering this?! Birds Instant Custard is incredible! All you have to do is add boiling water, continue to heat in the pan until it thickens and that's it! No lumps, no burning, nothing else! It tastes lovely and creamy. You can even add a little cornflour and it will sit perfectly on a homemade trifle.

Considering Japan is obsessed with pudding and putting 'custard' pudding in everything desert-related you'd think they had actual custard but no. I'm a big custard fan and love my hot puds and hot custard so I've had some serious withdrawal living in a country that only ever has cold deserts and cream on offer. Nobody would claim this is the best custard in the world but it takes seconds to make and does the job so there are no complaints from me.

I like to add custard to a lot of things like pudding, cakes, jelly and so much more. Birds Instant Custard is so simple to make. Just add hot water to the contents of the sachet and mix well. This is certainly a time saver compared to the traditional way of cooking custard. However, one drawback is the texture. I don't find it as creamy and smooth as the original Birds Eye custard.

Although this has more ingredients than the original custard, sometimes having an instant pack is wonderful. I've tried these a number of times and never really had luck with it getting really thick. Maybe my hot water urn doesn't heat the water to a high enough temperature. I find I always have to stick it in a pot and heat a little longer to get the thickness needed. A bit of a waste really, having to dirty a pot, but its definitely quicker than having to stir and stir the original powder and making sure it doesn't burn.

Would you believe that I couldn't find this product in a UK supermarket. There were other brands but this is my favourite. It's so creamy and smooth and never goes lumpy. Nice vanilla taste, perfect for serving with crumble, steamed puddings or making trifle. Great. It's a product I like to have in the store cupboard.

I got this but we never used the last packet. It was OK, but as others have said, it's not so creamy as the original. If you want something convenient then this is for you - although the original powder is not that hard to make up either.

I think for an extra two minutes work you might as well make the original version.

This instant custard is fantastic. So easy to make and yet, so tasty to eat.

I have looked all around the local supermarkets for something similar to this but they simply do not have it. Thankfully BCS do.

Now I have it as one of my regular purchases as custard goes extremely well with cakes and I love cakes.

No, nothing at all like Birds Original Custard powder. No matter how much you heat it up, it will never be as thick or as creamy as Bird's traditional. It tastes like a slimmer's variety and the fact that you just add hot water says it all. Not for me I'm afraid.

I love custard and would never be without Birds custard powder, however I recently tried their Instant Custard and was very impressed. No boiling or waiting for the custard to thicken, just mix with hot water and voila! The custard is ready. I have to say that it is slightly less 'creamier' than the original variety, probably because I use whole milk, this sachet probably contains semi skimmed milk powder or the like. Again, worth having in the cupboard when you are pushed for time and you need a dessert quick.
