About Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994, serving until 1999 and was a symbol of peace-making, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Mandela was actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in his 20s and directed a campaign of peaceful, nonviolent defiance against the South African Government and their racist policies for 20 years.

He spent 27 years in prison for political offences and will be a source of inspiration for civil rights activists all over the world for generations to come.
