With it being 57 Haddock and only 15 crabs I really think calling it a crab spread is a little misleading. The strong fish smell is tolerable but the taste is decided of fish and just a hint of crab. As a fish spread it is good and I enjoyed it but I do wish it had more crab taste.
I must agree with the other reviews of Shippams Crab Spread that it has a very fishy smell. The spread did taste good on some crackers, and I am sure it will make tasty sandwiches. Maybe instead of using tuna, some of Shippams Crab Spread will work nicely into some macaroni and a bit of dressing with some crispy veggies. An easy meal and a way to incorporate the crab spread with other flavors.
I am a fan of fresh crab that you can catch in the ocean. However, after trying Shippams Crab Spread, I couldn't help feel a little underwhelmed by the whole experience. The paste has a very pungent fishy aroma which can be quite off-putting, although the taste is not too bad. It can be used for sandwiches and baked potatoes if you desire. To me, the only positive is the convenience of being able to quickly assemble a sandwich for lunch without too much effort.
This is the first time I've tried Shippams crab spread. Upon opening the jar the fishy smell was overwhelming. It actually tasted quite good I suppose, if you could get past the smell. But I really couldn't stand it. Not sure if it was just my jar or if it's supposed to smell like that. I didn't get sick though so I'm giving it 3 stars.
I had seen Shippams for years, but never tried it. I had a little event coming up and was going to make little tea sandwiches with different fillings. About halfway through I was about to give up, then I saw something which reminded me of Shippams. I bought several jars of various flavours. I just laid out the bread, spread on a thin layer, added a bit of lettuce and tomato here and there. Easy peasy. It was quick and painless. Everyone loves the fancy little sandwiches. I myself have grown to love the spreads, esp. the crab spread. They are essential when you want a quick sandwich or something savoury with tea. Absolutely love them!
