You have to put butter on it, as you usually would with any bread. No point otherwise. Have another go.
I tried this on a whim, and was not that impressed. Maybe it was the unfamiliar squidgy, dense texture, or maybe the malt flavor. I ate it plain without butter or alongside a cuppa, which may have been where I went wrong. It is not something that I regret trying, as you cannot know if you like something until you have taken a crack at it. You cannot knock it until you try it and all that. I think if I were to try it again, I would drizzle it with a little Lyle's Golden Syrup, or butter as people seem to do. I would describe it as a dense, dry, bran like bread. What I found most intriguing was the brick like shape of the loaf. We do not have anything quite like it in the States, so it certainly was a fun experience for me if nothing else.
This is just wonderful served at three, alongside a cup of tea! An afternoon tea break wouldn't be the same without it. It is slightly sticky, and very malty and is perfect spread with butter. I preslice mine and then freeze it, so I'm able to just remove what I need I don't have a piece every day it freezes very well and once thawed individual portions thaw very quickly you'd never know it had been frozen, tastes the same and my loaf keeps fresh. Go on, treat yourself!
The soreen we ordered was very tasty. We also froze some. Once thawed it had the same texture and taste of the fresh soreen, the gooey texture spread with butter or on its own made a very tasty snack. We thought that in transit it may have been a little squashed but no it arrived as if just bought from the shop will buy again
One of my favourite fruit/malt loaves! Takes me right back to childhood eating them with my Dad! They are delicious fresh or defrosted after freezing. Like most fruit cakes they do keep longer than regular cake. Make sure you have clean fingers when you eat - they are just as sticky as you remember! :-)
I Remember having this as a kid and loving it. But I hadn't had it in years. I was expecting it to be a big disappointment as most things don't taste the way you remember but this did. It's rich and sticky and with butter on top, it's just excellent.
Soreen malt loaf is one of my must buy items, there's nothing else like it.
I know that others have commented on liking it with butter, and I agree that it's delicious that way. However, I generally eat it as it comes.
I order two at a time, as I like to tear great chunks of the first loaf, then be more ladylike with the second!
Malt loaf is low in fat, which makes it a great snack when the mid-afternoon hunger pangs hit.
I tried malt loaf for the first time when I ordered this so I didn't quite know what to expect. It's quite sweet and has a distinctive flavour that I think goes well with a sharp cheese or butter and some black tea. I liked it but could only eat one or two small slices at a time, so there was enough for several meals :)
Soreen malt loaf is the only malt loaf I ever eat. It is not cake nor is it bread, it is in a league of it's own. Dark brown in colour and soft and squishy packed with soft raisins.
It is at it's best when you spread a slice with butter as it brings out the flavours better.
You will either like this or not like it a bit like hate or love marmite this isn't something you will be unsure about.
