Arrowroot has been around for over 7,000 years but a glossy glaze on a cake wasn't its original purpose. The high starch containing root was a staple meal and its ability to draw out poison from a arrow wound was probably behind its name.
The powder can be used as cornstarch, flour or other thickening agents but it's completely flavourless and does not go cloudy, instead appearing clear and glossy. It can be added to soups, stews, cakes, puddings biscuits etc.
It is perfect for thickening clear sauces or shimmering fruit coulis. Put some glossy, shine back into your baking and a little goes a long way.
