I bought a packet of Birds trifle for Christmas as an easy option for a dessert for my grandchildren. It is very easy to make with separate ingredients in individual packets and clear instructions on the back of each packet. The only other ingredients you need to make this super dessert are water, milk, and fruit if you wish to add it to the jelly. I know some people don't like the dream topping as a cream substitute but I was surprised by the taste. It was delicious. There is enough trifle to be served amongst 6 people so great value.
I really love this trifle, it is easy to make and very nice, especially adding some canned fruit (I use pineapple) to the jelly. The only thing I have to say is that I wish the topping did not contain hydrogenated vegetable oil, which is so unhealthy. It would be great to have a topping made with real cream, at least it would be less artificial.
Lovely instant trifle mix, the only thing I don't really like about it is the dream topping 'cream' mix. I'd much prefer proper cream but on the whole, from one little box, you get a delicious tasting trifle that serves six people. Good quality and excellent value for money, I recommend it.
Birds Trifle is excellent value for money. Inside the little box you get 4 finger trifle sponges, a packet of flavoured instant jelly, in this case strawberry flavour; a packet of Birds custard powder, a packet of dream topping and a small packet of chocolate strands for the top. You should really make the custard first and allow it to cool while you prepare the jelly etc. The custard powder has to be blended with a drop of milk taken from 1 pint of milk and 1-2 tablespoons of sugar. You then bring it to the boil like you usually do with custard, simmer till thick, cover and leave to cool. While it's cooling, line your trifle dish or dishes with the sponge fingers and drizzle with a little sherry or martini, just to give it a bit of a kick. Dissolve the instant jelly in 3/4 pint of boiling water and pour over the sponge fingers. Leave till cool then put to set in the fridge. When set, give the custard a good stir with a balloon whisk and pour over the strawberry jelly. Once again leave in the fridge until set. About half an hour before serving, whisk the dream topping mix with 4 fl oz of ice cold milk and when thick and creamy, top the trifle. Sprinkle with the chocolate strands and refrigerate until needed. It really is delicious, easy to make and serves six if made in one dish. The only thing that could improve this trifle, would be a small tin of strawberries or other fruit. I for one would willingly pay a little extra for that addition, because then it really would be complete. Well worth the money and I recommend it!
