Patum Peperium – also known as Gentleman’s Relish – is a spiced anchovy paste that is particularly delicious when spread on hot toast. It can also be mixed with the mince meat in shepherd’s pie or melted into scrambled eggs.
First made in 1828 by a chap called John Osborne, this fishy condiment is made with a top secret recipe that only one employee at Elsenham Quality Foods (where it is currently made) is privy to!

Storage Instructions
- Storage Type: Ambient.
- Store in a cool, dry place. Once opened keep refrigerated and use within 4 weeks. Best Before End: See side of pack

This is my second purchase of Patum Peperium from British Corner Shop. Lovely stuff if you like savoury tastes and brings back memories of me and my father eating this with toast back in the 1950s....though it was not in a plastic container then! Have also ordered some of the Smoked Mackerel version to try. Have had the Smoked Salmon version before but in my opinion, it was a little insipid and too lemony to my spicy savoury food loving taste. I suspect that the mackerel will be better and a bit stronger. We shall see!

I spent a nearly a year searching the shops of Northumberland for this product as my husband absolutely loved it since trying it from a Deli that has now closed. With Christmas coming I decided to search online and came across the British Corner Shop. What a find I found the Gentleman's relish at a very good price and an extremely good delivery price. It was delivered on time and was packed in brilliant packing and a box which was easy to wrap for Christmas I am now back online ordering some more for hubbies birthday in January. The only downside I wish it was a larger size but because it is a good price I can afford to buy it more often thank you British Corner Shop you made my Christmas x

A taste of my childhood!
My dad always bought himself a jar (wasn't plastic back in the 50's!) around Christmas time as a treat. And it was soon apparent that I had similar taste buds as him and still love the salty taste.
Fortunately for me, my husband will eat only one or two types of fish, both white, so I can have the pot of Gentleman's Relish all to myself.
